Hello Everyone!

Some of you may know of me from my previous blog, at this link. That blog is being done purely as a hobby, although this blog is more for my studies. I am currently in the process of becoming a teacher, and in my state this of course involves a ton of examinations (at a monetary cost of course).

I will try and design this site as a discussion board so lets see how that goes!

When testing children on their literacy, often times comprehension is weighed tremendously in this. Personally, I believe phonics to be extremely important. With this being said,  My anticipated thought process is that intensified phonics instruction is only necessary for grade levels up to first grade. Phonics may seem simple, but with an absence of proper phonics instruction, reading for any student would be nearly impossible. The Importance of Comprehension When Reading

Comprehension is the destination in which should be reached by kids as a result of reading. Comprehension is much more than understanding a story. Without comprehension why would kids want to read in the first place? Comprehension ,and a lack there of, can indicate numerous problems that a child may have. For example, if a child does not assign a sound to a letter it is impossible to comprehend words, and therefore phonemic awareness is something that may be in a child's best interest to focus on. Comprehension difficulties most often stem from a variety of underlying problems (think poor fluency, no phonemic awareness and a lack of appropriate vocabulary).

The Benefits of Dramatic Play in Young Children.

 "Play is fundamentally important for learning 21st century skills, such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity..." (Michael Yogman, The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children). This fact alone demonstrates the importance of play for children. This post in particular will go over some of the benefits of dramatic play, also known as sociodramatic play or roleplaying. When participating in this type of play, children will commonly take up a role that they have observed of an elder. This is important because depending on what the child observes, the dramatic play may correspond.
